EPDM Roofing Association Starts Technical Education Initiative
First Technical Bulletin an EPDM Primer

Alexandria, Va. (August 20, 2003)

The EPDM Roofing Association (ERA) today announced the release of its inaugural technical bulletin on the attributes of the EPDM rubber roofing membrane. Entitled ERA Technical Bulletin No.1, this document serves as a comprehensive guide and primer to EPDM’s long list of attributes and overall system performance information. To view this bulletin, visit www.epdmroofs.org/tech/tech1.html. ERA will also create a full-color brochure version of this bulletin. “Given EPDM’s proven track record of longevity, durability and superior system performance, we identified EPDM’s key attributes and are pleased to share this information with the roofing and construction industries,” said Tom Hutchinson, ERA’s director of technical services. “Since our association believes that both roofing specification and installation procedures should be held to very high standards, we will continue to make substantial investments in conducting research and technical studies that support the quality and innovation behind the EPDM roofing membrane.”

Highlights of the ERA Technical Bulletin No. 1 include:

  • Eleven separate performance categories addressing EPDM’s unmatched attributes
  • Color photographs, schematics and other helpful images
  • In-depth section on EPDM manufacturers’ continued commitment to product innovations and advancements

About the EPDM Rubber Roofing Membrane

The EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) rubber roofing membrane has been an appealing choice of the low-slope commercial roofing industry for over 40 years, with more than 500,000 warranted roof installations on 20 billion-plus square feet. Annually, EPDM accounts for over 1 billion square feet of new roof coverings in the United States, and is the most frequently used roofing material in the marketplace. Building Design and Construction magazine and the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) confirmed in their 2002-2003 market surveys that EPDM continues to be the number one roofing membrane of architects, roof consultants and contractors for both new construction and replacement roofing projects.

The EPDM Roofing Association (ERA) is the first trade association solely representing the manufacturers of EPDM single-ply roofing products and their leading suppliers. ERA provides technical and research support to the public and the construction industry, and communicates the longstanding attributes, consistency and the value proposition of EPDM rubber membrane roofing materials.
